Tomato Pappu / Tomato Dal

Ingredients

 

  1. Toor  dal -  washed - 1 cup

  2. Tomato - finely chopped - 2 

  3. Onion  - finely chopped - 1

  4. Hing / Asafoetida - 1/2 Tsp

  5. Turmeric powder - 1 Tsp

  6. Red chilli powder - 1 Tsp

  7. Garlic - finely chopped - 2-3 cloves

  8. Urad dal - 1 Tsp 

  9. Curry leaves  - 4-5 

  10. Whole red chilies - 2-3 

  11. Mustard seeds - 1 Tsp 

  12. Cumin seeds -  1 Tsp

  13. Tamarind concentrate - 1 Tsp

  14. Vegetable oil - 1 Tbsp

  15. salt to taste

  16. water to adjust consistency.

Method

 

  1. Wash the dal thoroughly , add 1/4 tsp hing powder , turmeric powder , chopped tomato  , 2 cups water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles on medium flame.

  2. For Tampering, heat a pan on medium heat. Add oil. Once hot add mustard seeds , let them crackle. Add cumin seeds , hing powder , chopped garlic and curry leaves. Saute just for a minute. Add onion and saute till they turn translucent.

  3. Add the boiled dal and mix well. Add water to adjust consistency. Add tamarind concentrate and salt to taste and mix well.  Get a nice boil

  4. Garnish with finely chopped cilantro. Serve with hot rotis or rice.
