Tiffin Style Dal

Ingredients - 

 

  1. Toor Dal -  1 cup

  2. Haldi / Turmeric powder - 1 Tsp

  3. Hing powder - ½  Tsp

  4. Vegetable oil - 1 TBSP

  5. Mustard seeds - 1 Tsp

  6. Cumin seeds - 1 Tsp

  7. Curry leaves  -  4-5 

  8. Onion - finely chopped  - 1 

  9. Tomato finely chopped - 1

  10. Freshly grated coconut - ¼ cup

  11. Garlic cloves  - 3-4

  12. Green chilies - 2-3

  13. Jaggery - 1 Tsp

  14. Salt to taste 

  15. Water - 4 cups

  16. Freshly chopped cilantro for garnishing.

Method - 

 

  1. Wash toor dal and add to a pressure cooker pot . Add turmeric powder ,  ¼ Tsp hing powder and ½ Tsp oil . Add 2 cups of water . Pressure cook the dal for 3 whistles .

  2. For Masala - in a grinder jar add freshly grated coconut , garlic , green chilies and grind them coarsely.

  3. Heat a pot on medium heat. Once hot , add oil , mustard seeds ,  cumin seeds , hing powder and curry leaves.  Add onion and saute till they turn translucent. 

  4. Add tomatoes and salt to taste and saute till they turn mushy. Add grinded masala and saute for a couple of minutes.

  5. Add cooked dal and mix well. Add water to adjust consistency and jaggery . Get the dal to a nice boil and simmer on low heat for 3-4 minutes.

  6. Garnish with finely chopped cilantro and serve hot with roti and rice.
