Ingredients -

  1. Matar/Green peas - 1 cup
  2. Basmati rice - wash - 1 cup
  3. Onion - finely chopped - 1
  4. Tomato - finely chopped - 1
  5. Vegetable oil - 1 TBSP
  6. Mustard seeds / Mohri - 1 Tsp
  7. Cumin seeds / Jeera - 1 TSP
  8. Asafetida powder / HIng - 1/4 Tsp
  9. Curry leaves - 4-5
  10. Turmeric powder / Haldi - 1 Tsp
  11. Red chilli powder - 1 Tsp
  12. Biryani Masala - 2 TBSP
  13. Water - warm - 2 cups
  14. Salt to taste

Method For Preparing Vegan Matar Bhat

  1. Wash the rice and set it aside; no need to soak it beforehand.
  2. In a pot, heat vegetable oil.
  3. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds.
  4. When the mustard seeds start popping, add cumin seeds and asafetida powder.
  5. Add onions and saut until translucent.
  6. Add tomatoes and salt to taste, and cook until they turn mushy.
  7. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and Biryani masala. Mix well and saut until the masalas release oil.
  8. Add the rice and mix well.
  9. Pour in 2 cups of warm water and mix again.
  10. Cover the pot and cook for 10 minutes over medium heat.
  11. Reduce the heat and simmer on low flame for 20 minutes.
  12. Garnish with freshly grated coconut and finely chopped cilantro.
