Coconut Poli, also known as Kobri Obbattu or Thenga Holige in different parts of India, is a festive treat often made during special occasions. Traditionally, it’s prepared with wheat flour and ghee, but this version is thoughtfully reimagined to be wheat-free, dairy-free, and allergen-friendly, making it safe for people with multiple dietary restrictions.
The highlight of Coconut Poli is its rich stuffing made with freshly grated coconut and jaggery, which creates a naturally sweet, caramel-like flavor. A hint of roasted besan (chickpea flour) and cardamom enhances the aroma, giving it a warm, festive note. Instead of wheat flour, we use an allergen-safe flour base for the dough, ensuring that this treat can be enjoyed by everyone without worry.
Soft, slightly chewy, and filled with a gooey coconut-jaggery mixture, Coconut Poli is perfect for festivals, celebrations, or as a sweet ending to a homely meal.

Method
For Outer Covering (Poli Dough):
-
In a bowl, knead a soft, pliable dough using the allergen-free flour blend, water, salt, and vegetable oil.
-
Cover and let it rest for 2–3 hours.
For Stuffing:
-
Dry roast besan on low to medium heat for 7–8 minutes until it turns light brown and aromatic.

Add roasted besan and cardamom powder. Mix well and set aside to cool.
???? For Poli (Flatbread):
-
Heat a heavy griddle over medium-high heat.
-
Take a lemon-sized ball of dough and roll it into a small circle using rice flour for dusting.
-
Place a lemon-sized portion of stuffing in the center and enclose it by gathering the edges of the dough.
-
Roll out gently into a thin flatbread.
-
Place the poli on the heated griddle and cook on both sides until golden brown, adding oil as needed.
Recipe Notes:
-
Use finely grated coconut for a smoother stuffing texture.
-
Jaggery can be replaced with coconut sugar for variation.
-
Roast besan slowly to avoid a raw taste.
-
Always cool stuffing before filling to avoid tearing the dough.
-
Cook on medium flame for even browning.
