Curd Rice - The South Indian Food Combination

Curd Rice is one of the most loved and popular South Indian dishes where soft, mushy rice is mixed with curd (Indian yogurt) and salt. Then, a flavorful tempering made with basic whole spices & curry leaves is added to make it flavorful, and a few coriander leaves are also added for garnishing. It is a comforting meal for many people because it is easy to make, is refreshing, and has a homely aroma.


South Indian curd rice is known by various names in different parts of the nation. You might hear people calling it Thayir Sadam in Tamil, Dahi Chawal in Hindi, and Daddojanam in Telugu. It is offered to Hindi gods during pooja in many South Indian temples and households and later served as a prasad to the devotees.


Here is the recipe on how to make South Indian Curd Rice:


Ingredients

  1. 1 cup curd (homemade or bought)

  2. 2 cups boiled rice or ½ cup uncooked rice

  3. Salt (to taste)

  4. Few curry leaves

  5. One teaspoon of Cumin Seeds

  6. Two tablespoons of chopped Coriander Leaves

  7. 1½ tablespoons Oil

  8. One teaspoon of Urad Dal

  9. One teaspoon of Mustard Seeds

  10. 1 Dry Red Chili, halved

  11. One teaspoon of chana dal

  12. A pinch of hing


How to prepare a delicious :

After you have collected all your ingredients, be prepared to enjoy Curd rice. Follow the simple steps below to cook your dish.


Step 1

Add 1/2 cup of uncooked rice and 1 1/2 cup water to a pressure cooker. Put it on the stove and let it cook for 6-7 minutes or until 4-5 whistles come. Mash the rice after it has been boiled.


Step 2

Cool down the boiled rice if it is still hot. Once the rice is warm, add a cup of curd. Mix the curd and rice; add little water if you find them too thick.


Step 3

In a pan, heat 1 1⁄2 teaspoon of oil and add one teaspoon of mustard, cumin, chana dal, urad dal, and one broken dry red chili. Add salt as per your taste.


Step 4

Fry on low flame until dal gets golden in color. Then add a few curry leaves and after the curry leaves become crisp, add the hing.


Step 5

Cut the stove off and add this tempering to the curd rice. Stir it properly and serve on a plate.

Add coriander leaves on top to garnish.
