Matar Bhat / Green Peas Rice

Ingredients - 

 

  1. Matar/Green peas  - 1 cup

  2. Basmati rice - wash  - 1 cup

  3. Onion - finely chopped - 1

  4. Tomato - finely chopped  - 1 

  5. Vegetable oil - 1 TBSP

  6. Mustard seeds / Mohri - 1 Tsp

  7. Cumin seeds / Jeera - 1 TSP

  8. Asafetida powder / HIng - ¼ Tsp

  9. Curry leaves  - 4-5 

  10. Turmeric powder / Haldi - 1 Tsp

  11. Red chilli powder - 1 Tsp

  12. Biryani Masala - 2 TBSP

  13. Water - warm -  2 cups

  14. Salt to taste

Method

 

  1. Wash the rice and keep aside. No need to soak it beforehand.

  2. In a pot , heat vegetable oil. Once hot , add Mustard seeds. When seeds pop-up , add cumin seeds and asafetida powder. 

  3. Add onions and saute till they turn Translucent. Add tomatoes and salt to taste and cook till they turn mushy.

  4. Add turmeric powder ,  red chilli powder , and Biryani masala. Mix well and saute till the masala’s release oil.

  5. Add rice and mix well.  Add 2 cups of warm water and mix well. Cover and cook for 10 minutes on medium heat. Afterwards lower the heat and simmer on low flame for 20 minutes.

  6. Garnish with freshly grated coconut and finely chopped cilantro.
