Ingredients - 

 

  1. Tuvar Dal / Split pigeon pea - ¾  cup

  2. Moong Dal - ¼ cup

  3. Hing / Asafoetida - 1/2 Tsp

  4. Turmeric powder - 2 Tsp

  5. Mustard seeds - 1 TSP

  6. Cumin seeds -  1 TSP

  7. Red chili powder - 1 Tsp

  8. Green chilies - slit half  - 2

  9. Whole red chili  - 3-4 

  10. Garlic cloves - crushed - 7-8

  11. Vegetable oil - 2 Tbsp

  12. salt to taste

  13. water to adjust consistency.

Method - 

 

  1. Wash the dal thoroughly , add 1/4 tsp hing powder , turmeric powder , and 4 cups water. Pressure cook for 5 whistles on medium flame.

  2. For Tampering, heat a pan on medium heat. Add oil. Once hot add mustard seeds , cumin seeds , after they tamper add hing powder , green chilies , whole red chili , half of crushed garlic and red chili powder. Mix well.

  3. Add the boiled dal and mix well. Add water to adjust consistency.

  4. Add the salt and get a nice boil. Garnish with finely chopped cilantro.

  5. For 2nd tempering , Heat a tempering pan . Once hot add 1 TBSP oil , crushed garlic and whole red chilies. Mix well. Pour hot on dal just before serving.

  6. Serve with hot rotis or rice.
