Ingredients -

 

For Dal - 

  1. Toor Dal - 1 cup

  2. Turmeric powder - 1 Tsp

  3. Hing powder - ¼ Tsp

  4. Water  - 2 cups

 

For Masala - 

  1. Coriander seeds - 1 TBSP

  2. Chana Dal - 1 TBSP

  3. Fenugreek seeds -  ¼ Tsp

  4. Vegetable oil - 1 Tsp

  5. Red chili - Bedgi - 2-3 

  6. Coconut - freshly grated - ¼ cup

 

For Sambar - 

 

  1. Water  -  2 cups

  2. Tamarind paste - 1 TBSP

  3. Turmeric powder - 1 Tsp

  4. Mix vegetables - of your choice - 1 Cup

  5. Vegetable oil - 1 TBSP

  6. Mustard seeds - 2 TSP

  7. Hing - ¼ Tsp

  8. Curry leaves - 7-8

Method - 

 

  1. Dal - add the washed toor dal , water ,  turmeric powder , hing powder . Pressure cook for 3 whistles on medium heat.

  2. Masala - In a pan add vegetable oil , coriander seeds , chana dal , fenugreek seeds , whole red chilies . Roast for 2-3 minutes till they start releasing aroma . Remove the roasted masala and add to the grinder jar . Add freshly grated coconut and ½ cup water and grind to a smooth paste.

  3. For Sambar - In a pot add 2 cups water ,  tamarind paste ,  turmeric powder and bring it to boil. Add the mixed veggies , cover and cook for 5-7 minutes. Add the cooked dal , grinded masala , and salt to taste . Cover and cook for 10-12 minutes. Add water to adjust consistency. 

  4. Tadka - Add 1 TBSP vegetable oil , Once hot add mustard seeds ,  hing , curry leaves . Add to sambar and mix well. Bring to a boil and serve hot.
