Ingredients  For Gluten Free Jowar Upma

  1. Jowar flour – 1 cup
  2. Onion – finely chopped – 1
  3. Vegetable oil – 2 TBSP
  4. Mustard seeds – 1 Tsp
  5. Cumin seeds – 1 Tsp
  6. Hint powder – ¼ Tsp
  7. Garlic cloves – 2 – finely chopped
  8. Fresh green chilies – finely chopped – 2
  9. Dry red chilies – 2
  10. Curry leaves – 8-10
  11. Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  12. Red chili powder – 1 Tsp
  13. Sugar. – ½ Tsp
  14. Lemon juice –  ½ lemon
  15. Water –  boiling hot – 1 cup + 1 TBSP
  16. Salt to taste
  17. Cilantro for garnishing.

Method For Preparing Jowar Upma Recipe

  1. In a Kadai heat oil on medium heat. Once hot add , mustard seeds , cumin seeds and hint powder. Add garlic and fresh green chilies , sauté till the garlic turns red . Add dry red chilies , curry leaves and onion. Sauté till the onions turn translucent.
  2. Add jowar flour. Roast the flour on medium to low flame for 4-5 minutes  , till it starts releasing aroma. 
  3. Add the turmeric powder , red chili powder , sugar , salt to taste , lemon juice and mix well. Add 1 cup boiling hot water and mix well. Make sure there are no lumps. All the water is absorbed by the flour. Add another 1 TBSP hot water , quick mix. Cover and cook for 4-5 minutes. 
  4. Add lemon juice and finely chopped cilantro. Mix well and serve hot. Makes a perfect breakfast or snack option. I also make it as light dinner option.
