Dal Dhokli / Varan Phala

Gluten-Free Dal Dhokli Recipe

This Recipe is free from :

  • Wheat
  • Peanuts
  • tree nuts
  • dairy
  • casein
  • soy
  • egg
  • sesame
  • fish
  • shellfish

Ingredients –

For Dal –

  1. Tuvar Dal / Split pigeon pea – 1 cup
  2. Hing / Asafoetida – 1/2 Tsp
  3. Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  4. Mustard seeds – 1 TSP
  5. Cumin seeds – 1 Tsp
  6. Curry leaves – 4-5
  7. Red chilli powder – 1 Tsp
  8. Maharashtrian goda masala – 1 TSP
  9. Tamarind paste – ½ TSP
  10. Jaggery – 1 TBSP
  11. Vegetable oil – 1 Tbsp
  12. salt to taste
  13. water to adjust consistency.

For Dhokli or Phala –

  1. Wheat Flour / Atta – ½ cup
  2. Turmeric powder – ½ Tsp
  3. Red chilli powder – ½ Tsp
  4. Cumin – Coriander seeds powder – ½ Tsp
  5. Vegetable oil – 1 Tsp
  6. Salt to taste .
  7. Water to knead the dough.

Method –

For Dough –

  1. Mix whole wheat flour , turmeric powder , chilli powder , coriander-cumin seeds powder , salt , ½ Tsp of oil. Mix well .. Add little water and knead a soft dough.
  2. Coat with ½ Tsp of oil. Cover and keep aside for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Roll the dough into a medium size chapati of ½ MM thickness. Cut into diamond shaped pieces and keep aside.

For Dal –

  1. Wash the dal thoroughly , add 1/4 tsp hing powder , turmeric powder , 2 cups water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles on medium flame.
  2. For Tampering heat a pan on medium heat. Add oil. Once hot add mustard seeds , cumin seeds , after they tamper add hing powder.
  3. Add the boiled dal and mix well. Add water to adjust consistency.
  4. Add the rest of masalas , tamarind paste, jaggery and salt to taste. Add the cut dough pieces . Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Garnish with finely chopped cilantro and freshly grated coconut. Serve hot with a side of pickle and papad.
