Bajara Khichadi

Ingredients - 

 

  1. Bajara - soaked overnight  -  1 cup

  2. Moong dal - soaked 4-5 hours -  ½ cup

  3. Onion - finely chopped - 1

  4. Tomato - finely chopped  - 1

  5. Carrots / Gajar - cut into small cubes - ½ cup

  6. Green beans - ½ cup

  7. Green peas - ½ cup

  8. Vegetable oil -  1 TBSP

  9. Cinnamon stick -  ½ inch -1 

  10. Bay leaf - 1

  11. Star Anise - 1

  12. Black Cardamom - 1

  13. Cloves - 2-3 

  14. Cumin seeds / Jeera - 1 Tsp

  15. Hing powder - ½ Tsp

  16. Ginger-garlic paste - 1 TBSP

  17. Garam Masala powder - 1 Tsp

  18. Turmeric powder - 1 Tsp

  19. Red chili powder - 1 Tsp

  20. Coriander seeds powder - 1 Tsp

  21. Cumin Seeds powder - ½ Tsp 

  22. Salt to taste 

  23. Water  -  3 cups

Method - 

 

  1. In a heavy bottom pot , add vegetable oil. Once hot add cinnamon stick , bay leaf , cumin seeds and hing powder and  Saute together . Add onion and saute till they turn translucent. Add tomatoes and salt to taste and saute till they turn mushy.

  2. Add carrots, green peas, and green beans . Saute well for a minute.

  3. Add Bajra and moong dal and mix well.  Add turmeric powder , red chili powder , garam masala powder and mix well.

  4. Add water and get to a boil. 

  5. Cook for 3 whistles . Serve hot with a choice of raita or pickle.
